Sneak Peek into the Music of Christmas course E41

[00:00:00] Hi everyone, Gena Mayo from Music in Our Homeschool here, and I'm so happy to be talking to you today about Music of Christmas. I actually just returned from two performances this morning. Three of my children are in Beauty and the Beast, and I'm the vocal director. This is with CYT Chicago Christian Youth Theater.

And it's been a very fun run. So we had Tech Week this week. I'm exhausted. And we had two performances this morning. And then we'll be doing some more this weekend. So that's where I am at this point. But I want to talk to you about Music of Christmas. Because as I am recording this and going to be posting it soon, it is going to be Week of Thanksgiving So it's time to start thinking about Christmas and Christmas music and Christmas schooling.

So let me tell you about this course. When I first wrote it, it was just one year's worth of lessons, and then I've added to it, so now when you purchase it, you can actually use it for three years and do something different each year. And it's great for all ages. Little ones all the way through high school.

So year one gives you sixteen different 15-minute music lessons based on familiar Christmas carols or Christmas songs or Christmas music from the season. Let me tell you what those songs are or the different pieces. There's White Christmas, The Nutcracker, Joy to the World, Oh Holy Night, Silver Bells, Sleigh Ride, Mary, Did You Know, [00:02:00] Frosty the Snowman, In the Bleak Midwinter, Handel and his Messiah, Amahl and the Night Visitors, Silent Night, Carol of the Bells, Santa Lucia, Epiphany and the Day of the Kings, and O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. Now each lesson gives you videos to watch, text to read about the song or the piece, and at least one printable, and an online quiz. 

What I always want to encourage you all is that you can fit a 15-minute lesson into your homeschool day. Even if you just pull up the lesson on your phone and show the video to your kids like this, sitting on the couch. You can do that. It doesn't have to be some big setup. You don't have to print out the printables if you don't want to. Those are all optional. They're usually like a matching page or a coloring page, something like that. So I encourage you to be [00:03:00] sure to add some music education into your homeschool day.

So that's year one. Year two has Christmas traditions from around the world. And these are the different countries that you'll be studying. Australia, China, Russia, Scotland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Egypt, Israel, Brazil, and Mexico. So there are 12 different countries that you'll be studying their Christmas traditions. Each lesson includes some scripture to memorize, a lesson about the celebration of Christmas in that particular country. Some picture book suggestions and a craft or an art project. Now, if you add in the craft or the art project, that will take you beyond the 15 minutes of the lesson, but you might want to do that.

Now the third year is teaching you about the Festival of the Nine Lessons and Carols. This is a particular celebration of Christmas that was first done at King's College in Cambridge, England on Christmas Eve in 1918. The lessons from the Lessons and Carols are an adaptation for kids of the scripture. and listening to and singing the Christmas songs and carols. Additionally, there's a piece of famous artwork included with every lesson that's related to the scripture and that can be used for picture study.
